THE HOUSE MOUSE

The house mouse is the most commonly encountered and economically important of the commensal rodents. They are not only a nuisance, but they damage and destroy materials by gnawing, and eat and contaminate stored food. They are also of human health importance as carriers of disease. The adult house mouse has a head and body length of about 2 ½ – 3 ½ inches with its tail being an additional 2 ¾ - 4 inches long. It weighs from ½ - 3/4 ounce. It has a smooth fur coat that is usually dusty gray above and light gray to cream colored on the belly.

The house mouse has a pointed muzzle, small eyes and prominent ears. Its feet are short and broad. The tail is uniformly dark and semi-naked. Droppings of the house mouse are about 1/8 – ¼ inch long, rod shaped and have pointed ends. They can be distinguished from cockroach droppings because they lack the ridges which are prominent in cockroach droppings.

The house mouse is a prolific breeder. It can reach sexual maturity in 35 days.

Pregnancy lasts about 19 days. The young are blind and naked, except for vibrissae (long whiskers). They are weaned in about 3-4 weeks. Life expectancy is normally less than 1 year. The size of an average litter is 6 young, with the potential for about 8 litters per year. A female can have a litter about every 40-50 days. More than 1 litter may be present in the nest at the same time. Each female will average 30-35 weaned per year.

Mice have excellent senses, except for sight. They are color blind and can see clearly for only about 6 inches. They are excellent climbers and can run up walls which have rough surfaces. They are able to swim, but seldom do. They are able to jump about 12 inches high and can jump down about 8 feet without injury. They can survive in temperatures as low as 14F. They can run horizontally along pipes, ropes and wires.

A house mouse needs about 1/10 ounce of dry food per day and about 1/20 ounce of water (which is normally taken from the food source). It will produce about 50 droppings per day. Over a six month period, one pair of mice will eat about 4 pounds of food, produce about 18,000 droppings and excrete about 12 ounces of urine. The most common way they transmit disease is by contaminating food with their droppings and urine.

Mice are very social. Related males and females are compatible, but unrelated males are typically aggressive. They maintain a territory with the boundaries marked by urine. Territory size varies, but is usually very small. If food and water are plentiful, they may never venture more than 4-5 feet from their nests. Seldom will they travel more than 15 feet away. Mice are very inquisitive. They are likely to explore new things very quickly.

The house mouse is a nibbler. It eats only a small amount of food at any one time or place. They will eat many kinds of food, but prefer seeds. They feed mainly at dusk and just before dawn, but will nibble frequently in between. They sample new foods, but will return to old sources unless the new food is preferred. Required moisture is obtained from their food, but they will take free water when available, with a preference for sweetened water over plain water.

The house mouse prefers a nesting site that is dark, where there is abundant nesting material nearby and where there is little chance of disturbance. Nesting materials include paper products, cotton, packing materials, insulation, fabrics, etc. They will nest in almost any concealed space, such as walls, cabinets, furniture or stored products. They require an opening of ¼ inch to gain entry and are nocturnal in habit.

Part 2 of Sleep tight don't let the bed bugs bite

Increase in Nasty Bed Bugs Seen

ATLANTA - They are nasty little critters and they only come out at night but bed bugs are showing up in almost epidemic proportions and they aren't just showing up in beds -- they seem to be almost everywhere.

But you can protect yourself if you take the necessary precautions and you know what to look for.

Jason Stepowski, his son and his pregnant wife have all been viciously attacked by the critters. Experts say they don't carry disease but the numerous bites can be very painful.

And they are just in your bed anymore. From movie theatres like one in Times Square, the bed bugs are traveling at an alarming rate - even in high end stores and hotels. The nasty little critters prefer to catch a ride by jumping on you.

But you can protect yourself and it starts when you get off the plane...

"When you get back to your car you want to take your suitcase and wrap it in a thick heavy plastic bag," says Chuck Tindol.

Chuck Tindol is a pest control specialist with Allgood Pest Solutions . He says there are ways to protect yourself and keep the nasty bugs out of your bed and out of your home and it starts when you pull your bag out of your car and then head to the wash.

"You don't want to empty it inside your house because if you have bed bugs you are going bring them in your house," said Tindol.

Tindol says the next step is separating your clothes and heading to the laundry room.

"What will kill bed bugs is heat, so use the hot cycle," said Tindol.

And then we head to the bed room, so when traveling on business or pleasure learn how to check your beds. Dead bed bugs look no bigger than an apple seed but you can find them if you look carefully.

Tindol also says that next step is to encase your mattress in a protective covering that can be purchased where bedding is sold or from pest control specialists.

Tindol also adds that if you notice the bedbugs you need to call an expert immediately to eradicate the problem or they will continue to infest that area.

Sleep tight, don't let the bed bugs bite!

My Fox Atlanta's Mark Hayes reports on the growing epidemic and resurgence of bed bugs.
Chuck Tindol is on hand to inform on how to prevent bedbugs from getting into your home.

Pest Control Info on Earwigs

Earwigs get their name from the myth that they crawl into people’s ears and tunnel into the brain. This is of course not true. Common in the United States (22 types), the earwig has over 1000 species throughout the world.

An earwig can grow to about one inch in length, but it is common to find smaller ones that have not fully grown to this size. They are long and narrow in shape and have a dark brown coloration. This insect has six legs, a pair of antennae and does not have fully developed wings. They are easily identified by the forceps-like pincers at the end of the abdomen. Although they look scary, they do not spread disease.

Earwigs feed on flowers, leaves, fruits and molds as well as other insects. They typically spend the day hidden under piles of debris such as compost, leaf litter and grass clippings or in decomposed areas of trees or wooden structures. They enter by crawling through cracks in the walls.

The best control methods for earwigs involve IPM techniques such as the removal of debris and vegetation from the surrounding area and the sealing of cracks and crevices to prevent entry.

Pest Control and Prevention

Allgood Pest Solutions professionals utilize extensive pest control training and pest elimination expertise to insure that effective service procedures are followed to remove pest populations and prevent pests from returning. We start by conducting a thorough inspection of your home, noting all signs of pest activity, and locating potential points of pest entry or breeding sites. We then utilize a combination of non-pesticide techniques and pesticide applications for the best pest service to your home. (This includes preventive maintenance reports to assist you in blocking access points or removing potential harborages.)

We carefully place baits, liquids, dusts, traps or granular products to create barriers around and throughout critical areas to kill existing pests and repel those that may attempt to enter from outdoors. A thorough exterior treatment prevents many pest problems inside your home.

At Allgood Pest Solutions, we understand the importance of good environmental responsibility and take all necessary precautions to protect your family and your property from being harmed.

Tell Those Mosquitoes to Buzz Off!

It happens to all of us. You’re sitting outside, enjoying a lazy summer evening, when a familiar high-pitched noise assaults your ear. Almost simultaneously you feel a sting, which prompts an “ouch” and a quick slap in the offender’s general direction. They’re back and they’re determined to drive you inside.

Mosquitoes are pesky little insects than can wreak havoc on any outside plans. Not only can they transmit West Nile Virus, Encephalitis, Malaria and Dengue Fever but they also transmit heartworms to dogs and cats. Plus, they’re just downright annoying.

So what can you do to make your yard a no-mosquito zone? First, call your Allgood representative. He’ll inspect your home and yard and prepare a customized plan, including applying larvacide to noted breeding sites and adulticide to harborage areas. Throughout the summer, until mosquito season ends in October, your Allgood representative will visit every month to ensure your yard remains mosquito free.

Second, employ your own prevention methods. Use insect repellent that contains DEET and wear light, loose-fitting clothing. Also keep all doors (including garage doors) shut and check window and door screens to ensure they fit properly and don’t have holes. If you have standing water from birdbaths, wading pools, etc. replace the water at least once a week. Also clean roof gutters and downspouts regularly. Weekly lawn maintenance will also help cut the mosquito population – keep bushes and shrubs trimmed, the lawn mowed and eliminate any unneeded vegetation, weeds and brush.
For a FREE Mosquito evaluation at your home please call 1-800-ALLGOOD or contact us online @ http://www.allgoodpestsolutions.com/

Russell Tindol's interview from the Macon Cycling Classic

Hundreds of cyclists from across the southeast raced around Macon's Tattnall Square Park Saturday.
The event marked the city's first annual Macon Cycling Classic. The city hosted a similar event last June, but event organizers say they decided to move this year's race to the College Hill corridor.
Both beginner and professional cyclists raced in the all-day event that featured criterium races on a 0.7 mile course around the park.
Sixteen-year-old Russell Tindol traveled from Gwinnett County, Ga. for the event. The cyclist says he's been racing since he was nine years old. He won the juniors race for his age group on Saturday.
"It hurts but it's a fun, thrilling kind of thing," Tindol said. "It's really hard not to like the sport once you start doing it."
He says cycling builds character and mental toughness.
"It's all about team tactics and there's a lot of thinking that goes into it, along with just being able to hang on and push yourself as hard as you can," Tindol said.

Two years ago, Tindol battled a brain tumor. He says treatment kept him from racing competitively, but now he's cancer free and happy to back on the course. He says he hopes other young athletes give cycling a try.
"It'd be more fun to have more people to compete against and meet more people and race all around the U.S. if we could," Tindol said.
Bill Causey, who directs a Walthall-sponsored racing team and helped organize Saturday's event, says he hopes the cycling classic encourages more participation in the sport.
"Macon's a little behind as far as cycling as a sport," Causey said. "We don't have bike lanes around, we don't have biking facilities to speak of, but we're hoping to change all that."
He says the College Hill Alliance, Mercer University and other community groups are working together to increase events like Saturday's. He says future races, like Saturday's, will bring visitors and more spending to downtown Macon.

Mike Tindol named Volunteer of the Year

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society names Mike Tindol its 2009 Light The Night Volunteer of the Year

(Atlanta- March 15, 2010)- Mike Tindol, vice president of Allgood Pest Solutions, was named The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) Light The Night Volunteer of the Year at it’s annual Volunteer Recognition Event this month. Mike, a volunteer with the organization for seven years, beat out hundreds of volunteers to receive the prestigious award.

Mike first began his involvement with LLS through it’s Team In Training program and then got his company involved through the annual Light The Night Walk. The Walk, held each fall in downtown Atlanta and four other cities across the state, raises critical money to fight blood cancer. When Mike became involved with the walk, he was president of the Georgia Pest Control Association (GPCA). In addition to his own company, Allgood Pest Solutions, Mike recruited more than 30 other GPCA member companies to get involved—raising more than $630,000 over the last six years for LLS through employee fundraising and/or company sponsorship.

In addition to the Light The Night Walk, Mike has also lent his time and efforts in fundraising for many other LLS events including it’s annual Strike Out Leukemia & Lymphoma Radiothon and the annual Rhubarb Jones Celebrity Golf Tournament.

“I am sincerely grateful for this recognition from The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.”, Mike said. “The efforts of our dedicated team at Allgood Pest Solutions and the wonderful relationships we enjoy with our clients and the partnership with the other Georgia Pest Control Association companies, has been the key to the success of our involvement. To be part of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society mission has enriched my life and brought additional purpose to our organization.”

“There is no-one more deserving of this award than Mike Tindol,” says Dick Brown, executive director of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Georgia Chapter. “Mike has been a tireless advocate for our organization and has worked extremely hard to enhance our awareness in the pest control industry and our community. We are tremendously blessed to have Mike working for our cause and join the hundreds of thousands of people fighting blood cancers in thanking him for his desire to make a positive difference in their lives.”

Heart-healthy Eating on the Go

It’s relatively easy to eat well at home. After all, a trip to the grocery store can yield an abundance of heart-healthy food, including berries, spinach, olive oil, salmon and nuts. But what about when you’re eating out - how do you pick an entrée that’s good for you? When it comes to nutrition and smart eating choices, deciphering a menu can be like trying to read Sanskrit. Here are some tips to help you keep your heart (and the rest of your body) healthy.

- Skip appetizers, cocktails and other extras like bread. They often contain extra fat, sodium and calories.

- Choose foods that are steamed, roasted, broiled, baked, grilled or poached.

- Pick chicken, seafood or a lean meat entrée.

- Have any condiments served on the side (butter, salad dressing, sauces, gravies, etc.)

- If you must have dessert, choose fresh fruit, sherbet, angel food cake or something similar.

- Substitute unhealthy items for healthy ones. Instead of French fries get a baked potatoes or vegetables.

- Ask the server if smaller portions are available. Or save half of the entrée for lunch the following day.

- Don’t be shy about communicating with your server. Many times, food can be cooked to order or substitutions can be made that aren’t on the menu.

- Choose foods cooked in monounsaturated or polyunsaturated oils: olive oil, canola oil, peanut oil, soybean oil, corn oil, safflower oil and sunflower oil.

Celebrate National Women’s History Month!

Marie Curie. Queen Elizabeth. Georgia O’Keefe. Harriet Tubman. Throughout history, women like these and many more have left indelible marks on the world. This month, the National Women’s History Project is celebrating 30 years of honoring famous women. In 1980, through the efforts of the NWHP, President Carter declared the week of March 8 as women’s history week; and, in 1987, Congress extended the week to include the entire month of March.

We’ve all heard of the more well-known women, like those mentioned above, but how much do we know about those women who came from our own great state? Take Juliette Gordon Low for example.

Born in Savannah in 1860 and affectionately known as “Daisy”, Low grew up in Savannah, leaving only as a teenager to attend school. After marrying Englishman William Mackay Low in 1886, Low moved to England but came back during the Spanish-American war to help. After returning to England and her husband’s subsequent death in 1905, Low was left wondering what to do with her life. She met Sir Robert Baden-Powell, founder of the Boy Scouts and Girl Guides, in 1911, and discovered her passion for helping young women and soon moved back to America. According to her official biography, that year she made a historic telephone call to a friend (a distant cousin), saying, "I've got something for the girls of Savannah, and all of America, and all the world, and we're going to start it tonight!"

Low started the America Girl Guides on March 12, 1912, with her niece Margaret "Daisy Doots" Gordon as the first official member – a total of 18 girls joined that day. The following year Low changed the name to Girl Scouts.

Today, the Girl Scouts has more than 3.7 million members and is dedicated to building girls of courage, confidence and character, who make the world a better place. Over the years, more than 50 million American women have learned and grown by being part of the Girl Scouts – a fact Low would be very proud of.

Five Steps That Will Change Your Finances

Five Steps That Will Change Your Finances

Do you ever feel like your paychecks are gone before you even get them, and you have no idea where they went? Or maybe credit card payments have taken over your life and you feel like you can’t even get ahead. Whatever your situation, there’s no better time than now to take control of your finances. Here are five things you can start doing today that can change the way you handle money.

1. Create a budget. It’s imperative to have a plan for your money. Start with a zero-based budget, meaning every dollar you make is assigned a category (food, housing, gas, etc.) until you have zero dollars left. If you’re married, make sure you sit down and do this together with your spouse. Having a budget in place is very liberating – it allows you to see where each dollar goes and can show you where you’re overspending or underspending.

2. Start paying off debt. Debt is always a burden. It prevents you from saving money because you’re making payments to someone else instead of yourself. It also hinders your ability to invest and give. Add up your total debt, excluding your mortgage. If the total is greater than 50 percent of your gross income, you probably need to sell something, whether it’s a car, boat or something else.

3. Build an emergency savings account. A job layoff, medical emergency, car repair or anything else that pops up is far less stressful when you have money in the bank to pay for it, instead of living off of credit cards.

4. Check your insurance policies. Not having adequate coverage or the right coverage could cost you. For example, if you live in an area prone to flooding flood insurance is a necessity, as this past summer’s rains proved.

5. Adjust Witholdings. If you’re expecting a big tax refund this year, adjust your withholdings so you take more home each paycheck. Otherwise you’re giving the government an interest-free loan each year when you could put that money to better use paying off debt, paying expenses or funding your emergency savings account.

Team USA Going for Gold in Vancouver

Go Team USA! Georgia Athletes You’ll Want to Watch

If you’re not planning on tuning into the 2010 Winter Olympics, you’re making a big mistake. With two athletes from our great state competing, it’s time help cheer them onto victory. Here’s some background on each one to help you get even more excited about Team USA!

Tanith Belbin
Figure skating
Born in Kingston, Ontario, Canada, and now training in Pennsylvania, the 26-year-old ice dancer made Atlanta her home when her parents moved here. She spends most of her time traveling but enjoys seeing Atlanta’s sights and shopping when she can.
In September 2009, she and partner Ben Agosto made America proud when they won silver at the Torino games, the first time since 1976 that a U.S. team won. They also won silver at the 2006 winter games in Torino, Italy.

Elana Myers
Bobsled
It may seem ironic that Douglasville native Elana Myers is now an Olympic bobsledder, considering the only snow she ever saw growing up was the “blizzard” of 1993. But she didn’t let that stop her and is now the brakeman for Team USA, along with driver Shauna Rohback. In 2009, the team won gold during the Whistler World Cup and silver at the World Championships.
Her parents, who still live south of the city, aren’t strangers to the athletic world. Her dad, Eddie, was a running back for the Atlanta Falcons.

There are other Georgia athletes that have competed at the winter Olympics throughout the years and many memorable moments that have occurred, thanks to all our athletes.

Do you have a favorite winter games memory? "The Miracle on Ice", Eddie "The Eagle", or is there a sport that captured your attention or a particular athlete? If so, we’d love to hear about it. Share your Olympic memories on our Facebook page at www.allgoodpestsolutions.com/facebook.html.

Name that Movie!

With Valentine’s Day just a few days away, it’s time to break out the classic romantic movies. You may have seen them all but how well do you remember them? Test your movie lore with our romantic movie quote quiz.

Quotes: (choices below)

1. “Don't you love New York in the fall? It makes me wanna buy school supplies. I would send you a bouquet of newly sharpened pencils if I knew your name and address. On the other hand, this not knowing has its charms.”

2. “I love that after I spend the day with you, I can still smell your perfume on my clothes. And I love that you are the last person I want to talk to before I go to sleep at night. And it's not because I'm lonely, and it's not because it's New Year's Eve. I came here tonight because when you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible.”

3. “I am NOT going to New York to meet some woman who could be a crazy, sick lunatic! Didn't you see Fatal Attraction?”

4. “Well, I won’t kiss you for it either.”

“Open your eyes and look at me. No, I don't think I will kiss you - although you need kissing badly. That's what's wrong with you. You should be kissed, and often, and by someone who knows how.”

5. “From the first moment I met you, your arrogance and conceit, your selfish disdain for the feelings of others made me realize that you were the last man in the world I could ever be prevailed upon to marry.”

6. “I love you. You complete me. And I just...”

“Shut up. Just shut up. You had me at hello.”

7. "It was nobody's fault but my own. I was looking up. It was the nearest thing to heaven. You were there."

8. “Of all the gin joints, in all the towns, in all the world, she walks into mine. But what about us?”

“We'll always have Paris.”

Is that an ant or a termite?

Ants

Ants are pests around the home because they feed on and contaminate human foods, infest structures and build unsightly mounds in lawns. In some cases, ants are able to inflict painful bites or stings. Ants do not attack or eat fabrics, leather or wood in houses; however, some species can establish nests in decaying wood in structures.
Ants can be recognized from other insects because they have a narrow waist called a pedicel, with either one or two nodes (joints) between the thorax and abdomen. Also, ants have elbowed antennae. Winged reproductive ants have four wings with the first pair being much larger in size than the hind pair. Ants are frequently confused with termites. However, termites have a broad waist, straight antennae and four wings of equal size.
